About
About WattWise Labs
An independent running-cost index, and the honesty rules we hold ourselves to.
WattWise Labs is an independent running-cost index for appliances and electronics. Every model page turns one number, a certified appliance's published annual energy use, into the figure that actually matters at purchase time: what it costs, in real dollars, to keep running.
What we do
We take ENERGY STAR's public certified-product data, which lists each model's annual energy use in kilowatt-hours, and multiply it by the US average residential electricity rate ($0.1856/kWh, EIA) to estimate an annual running cost. We rank models within their class two ways: by raw running cost, and by a size-adjusted efficiency percentile so a large, efficient model is not unfairly beaten by a small one. The full formula is on how we score.
What "Labs" means here
WattWise Labs is a data-analysis operation, not a physical testing lab. We do not plug in appliances, run them, or measure their real-world power draw ourselves. Every figure on this site is computed from ENERGY STAR's published federal data, and we say so on every page that uses it.
No paid placement
Rankings are sorted strictly by the numbers, cheapest or most efficient first. We do not accept payment from manufacturers or retailers to influence placement, and we carry no affiliate links to specific listings. The site is free to read and funded by display advertising only.
Independence
WattWise Labs is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated on behalf of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of Energy, ENERGY STAR, or any appliance manufacturer. Brand and model names are used for identification only. See our full disclaimer.
